PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP:

Turn Assessment Data Into Action

Presenter: Diana Benner and Miguel Guhlin

Formative assessment can double student learning gains, but only if you can read the data and act on it. In this hands-on, three-hour workshop, you’ll learn a high-impact framework for diagnosing where students are in their learning (surface, deep, or transfer) and matching them to the right high-effect-size strategy. You’ll put theory into practice immediately: first analyzing a realistic assessment scenario by hand to map student phases, then leveraging Gen AI to run item analysis in seconds. Compare your professional judgment against AI-generated insights, learn how to prompt for airtight reliability, and practice importing CSV data into Gen AI. You’ll leave ready to transform raw scores into targeted interventions and cut your data-analysis time in half. Ideal for K–12 teachers, instructional coaches, and campus leaders ready to make data work for them.

Participants will leave with:

  • Practical Frameworks for Diagnosing Learning Phases
  • A High-Impact Strategy Matching Guide
  • Ready-to-Use Gen AI Data Analysis Prompts
  • A Streamlined CSV Workflow
  • Experience in Validating AI-Generated Findings

Outline:

Entry Ticket (5 min):

  • Quick poll as participants arrive: “How confident are you turning assessment data into next-day instruction?”

Block 1: Intro to the Frameworks (40 min)

  • Phases of learning: surface, deep, transfer
  • SOLO Taxonomy and the ACE Framework (Articulate, Connect, Extend)
  • High-Effect Size Instructional Strategies (HESIS) matched to phases: Jigsaw (surface/deep), Argumentation, Outlining/Organizing, Reciprocal Teaching (deep), Service Learning and Problem-Solving Teaching (transfer)
  • Opening activity: Jigsaw — small groups each take one phase/strategy pairing and teach it back
  • Transition: “Apply” — groups carry their strategy into the scenario work

Block 2: Apply It by Hand — The Paper Scenario (50 min)

  • The scenario: 5 students, a pre-assessment, and a score sheet (template provided)
  • Work with the (fake) data to identify what phase of learning each student is in
  • Plan interventions and differentiation for each
  • Transition: thumbs check before the break

Break (10 min)

Block 3: Validate with Gen AI (55 min)

  • How to set up Gen AI for success (reliable, grounded results)
  • Export your data as a CSV file
  • Run the item analysis with Gen AI
  • Verify and validate: compare your by-hand analysis against the AI’s assessment
  • Where the two agree, where they differ, and which to trust

Block 4: From Analysis to Teaching (15 min)

  • Share out about the data and the process
  • Modify teaching to match each student’s phase of learning
  • Debrief across groups

Exit Ticket (5 min)

  • “What’s the first thing you’ll try, and what’s one question you still have?”
